When Should My Child Have An Eye Test?

We recommend children have their first eye exam around kindergarten age, typically 4 to 6 years old before they start school. This is the age when undetected vision problems can begin affecting learning, concentration and development without parents or teachers realising the cause.

After the first exam, children should be tested every two years unless a concern arises sooner. If your child is squinting, sitting close to screens, struggling to read, or complaining of headaches, book an appointment sooner rather than later.

Emma and the team at Veyep have been caring for Balmain families for over 20 years. We’re experienced at making children feel comfortable and relaxed during their visit.

What happens during a children's eye exam?

A children’s eye exam at Veyep follows the same thorough process as an adult examination, adapted to be age-appropriate and stress-free. Your child doesn’t need to be able to read to have their vision assessed accurately.

During the appointment we assess:

  • Distance and near vision
how clearly your child can see at different distances
  • Colour vision
identifying any colour vision deficiencies early
  • 3D and depth perception
assessing how well both eyes work together
  • Eye health
checking the overall health of the eyes and surrounding structures
  • Binocular vision
how the eyes coordinate and focus together

The appointment typically runs 30 to 45 minutes. Parents are welcome to stay with their child throughout.

Signs Your Child May Need An Eye Test

Children often don’t realise their vision is different from everyone else’s, they assume what they see is normal. That’s why regular testing matters. Watch out for these signs:

  • Squinting or closing one eye to see clearly
  • Sitting very close to the TV or holding books close to their face
  • Losing their place frequently when reading
  • Complaints of headaches or tired eyes, especially after reading
  • Avoiding reading or close work
  • Rubbing their eyes frequently
  • Poor hand-eye coordination or difficulty with sport
  • A noticeable turn or squint in one or both eyes

If you notice any of these, book an eye exam sooner rather than waiting for the next routine check.

Are Children's Eye Exams Bulk Billed?

Yes. Children’s eye exams at Veyep are bulk billed under Medicare, meaning there is no out-of-pocket cost for the examination itself. You just need to bring your child’s Medicare card to the appointment.

Medicare covers standard eye examinations for children. If additional products or services are recommended following the exam, such as glasses or further testing – our team will always discuss costs with you clearly before proceeding.
